Most Shopify stores do not have a traffic problem. They have two or three specific places where buyers quietly give up. Finding those places, and fixing them properly, is worth more than almost any amount of additional ad spend.
Measure before you redesign
The instinct when conversion disappoints is to redesign. The better move is to instrument. Map the funnel from landing to purchase, measure drop-off at each step, and watch real sessions at the step with the worst leak. The fix is usually narrower and cheaper than a redesign.
- Landing → product view: is the right product findable?
- Product view → add to cart: are objections answered?
- Cart → checkout: are there surprises?
- Checkout → purchase: is anything making it hard to pay?
Product pages answer objections
Every hesitation on a product page is a question the page did not answer. Will it fit? What is it made of? When will it arrive? What if I do not like it? Put the answers where the hesitation happens, sizing next to the size selector, delivery estimate next to the add-to-cart button, returns policy one line below it.
On one store, restructuring product pages around session-recording evidence (without changing the visual design at all) produced most of a 34% conversion lift.
Surprise costs kill checkouts
Unexpected shipping costs remain the most common reason for abandoning a checkout. Show delivery costs early, ideally on the product page, and state the free-shipping threshold clearly in the cart. A buyer who knows the total before checkout converts; one who discovers it at the last step often leaves.
Checkout is the critical path
- Offer the wallets your customers already use, Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal
- Enable guest checkout; do not force account creation
- Keep form fields to the minimum and use address autocomplete
- Show clear progress and an honest delivery estimate throughout
- Test on a mid-range phone on a mobile connection, because that is most of your traffic
Speed is a revenue metric
Every app you install adds script weight, and many themes ship far more JavaScript than they need. Audit apps quarterly, remove what is not earning its place, serve modern image formats at the right sizes, and hold the theme to a performance budget. Faster stores convert better, and they rank better too.
Increase order value without annoying anyone
Relevant bundles, a well-placed free-shipping threshold and genuinely complementary cross-sells lift average order value. Aggressive pop-ups and pre-ticked add-ons lift it briefly and cost you trust. The test is simple: would a good shop assistant suggest it?
Test properly
A/B tests on low-traffic stores are frequently underpowered and produce false winners. Calculate the sample size before running a test, run it for full weeks to capture weekday effects, and report losers alongside winners. Changes that cannot be tested reliably should be judged on qualitative evidence and shipped cautiously.
Where to start
Instrument the funnel, find the single worst leak, watch twenty sessions at that step, and fix what you see. Then do it again. Compounding small, evidence-based fixes beats one big redesign almost every time.
